Inaugural Season Begins on High Note for Bayhawks

Dartmouth, MA - - The inaugural season for Women's Outdoor Track and Field jumped off to a great start at UMASS Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.  In the Bayhawks first event, the long jump, freshman Cierra Torres (somerset-Berkley) became a national qualifier for the NJCAA outdoor track and field championships.  Cierra's jump of 15'5" advanced her to the finals at the Corsairs Classic where she finished 10th amongst NCAA Division II and III competitors.  That was not the end of Cierra's day as she went on to qualify for nationals in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.42.

Veronica Vasconcelos (Greater New Bedford Regional High School) competed in the shot put and threw a distance of 6.85m.  Breanna Borges (GNBRVTHS), Makayla Pinkston (Wareham H.S.) and Katelyn Silvia (Duffee) competed in the 100m.

The team will head to Fitchburg State University next Saturday for the Jim Sheehan Invitational.
