On August 1st 2023, Stephen Gardiner was named Head Coach of the Women and Men's Cross-Country program at Bristol Community College. Director of Athletics and Recreation, Brian Fernandes stated, "We are honored to have Coach Gardiner continue his coaching career at our institution. For over thirty-years, coach has shown the ability to create a strong culture for athletes to perform at their highest levels".
 
Coach Gardiner led the University of Massachusetts Track and Field team from 2008-2018 and became the assistant coach from 2018-2022. He coached six All-American Academic teams during that time. In 2012 and 2014, the Men's team won the indoor and outdoor championships. In 2012, the Women's team were the indoor and outdoor runner-up. Coach Gardiner was named a Little East Coach of the Year in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. In 2018, coach was honored as the New England Region Outdoor Coach of the Year.
 
At New Bedford High School, Coach Gardiner was responsible for five Outdoor Boys' Team titles in 1980, 1983, 1993, 1995 and 2002. Coach led three National High School All-Americans, fifty-five Division 1 individual championships and thirteen All-State individual championships. Coach Gardiner helped thirty-two boys capture All-State relay championships during his time.
 
Coach Gardiner has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He is a retired teacher of over 30 thirty years of service for the New Bedford Public Schools. Coach Gardiner currently resides in New Bedford MA.
